Pine Creek Culvert Replacement at Robinson Canyon
Watershed Restoration Project (2004)
Salmon License Plate Funds $27,983
Total Project Cost $38,523
After purchasing Pine Creek Ranch in 1999, the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs developed a wildlife habitat conservation and management plan for the 42,000-acre ranch in cooperation with state and federal environmental agencies. With the objective of facilitating fish passage, the tribes began removal of fish-passage barriers in Pine Creek. Until recently, a severely undersized culvert upstream of completed barrier-removal projects continued to impede fish passage to over 10 miles of spawning habitat for John Day steelhead, an ESA-listed species. OWEB funds from the salmon license plate program provided engineering, materials, and contracted services for removal of this final fish-passage barrier. Today a large bottomless-arch culvert allows redband trout and steelhead to pass upstream to miles of valuable fish habitat during good water years.

Hashknife Bridge
Sediment Reduction and Fish Passage Improvement (2005)
Salmon License Plate Funds $54,980
Total Project Cost $75,955
In the past few years, Hashknife Culvert in the Bridge Creek watershed, one of the largest steelhead producers in the John Day Basin, has failed during multiple high water events, depositing large amounts of sediment in the stream and causing erosion of the streambed. The undersized culvert is also a seasonal impediment to most life stages of salmonids. Using salmon license plate funds from OWEB, the Wheeler Soil and Water Conservation District will remove the culvert and install a bridge planned to withstand severe flood events. When completed, the replacement will improve water quality and allow year round access to several miles of prime salmonid habitat.
