Janelle McFarland-Dunlevy, Medford, was among 11 people from throughout Oregon honored for their work to protect and improve streams, lakes and watersheds at a luncheon Friday in Seaside.

The Oregon Watershed Enhancement Board presented the Spirit of the Oregon Plan Awards during the state agency’s biennial conference. “We are pleased to recognize the exemplary work and leadership of these dedicated people,” said Tom Byler, OWEB executive director.

McFarland-Dunlevy said she has been interested in wildlife topics since entering college in 1992. With dual degrees in fisheries and wildlife science, she found herself drawn to natural resources public education in jobs with the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife and the Oregon State Police. As a former Oregon State Trooper, Janelle conducted local, state and federal agency coordination meetings focusing on natural resource protection and education.

She serves as the president of the Rogue Basin Coordinating Council. “She goes above and beyond expectations to provide meaningful outreach and education,” said Mark Grenbemer, OWEB program representative who nominated her. McFarland-Dunlevy also volunteered to be the project manager during implementation of a major fish passage project on Little Butte Creek. McFarland-Dunlevy helps local guide groups and councils connect on project implementation work, Grenbemer said.

OWEB projects support the Oregon Plan for Salmon and Watersheds that emphasizes private, voluntary actions to restore wild salmon populations. OWEB is a state agency led by a policy oversight board. The agency provides grants and services to citizen groups, organizations and agencies working to restore healthy watersheds in Oregon. Funding comes from the Oregon Lottery as a result of a citizen initiative in 1998, sales of salmon license plates, federal salmon funds and other sources.
