Spirit of the Oregon Plan Awards presented Oct. 27 in Seaside
Gerry Hoagland was among 11 recipients from throughout Oregon honored for their work to protect and improve streams, lakes and watersheds at a luncheon in Seaside.
The Oregon Watershed Enhancement Board presented the Spirit of the Oregon Plan Awards during the state agency’s biennial conference. “We are pleased to recognize the exemplary work and leadership of these dedicated people,” said Tom Byler, OWEB executive director.
Hoagland is an Owyhee Watershed Council Board member and assessment chair who resides in Wilson, ID.
“The success of the Oregon Plan for Salmon and Watersheds relies on individuals like Jerry who are willing to sacrifice their own time and energy,” said Karen Leiendecker, OWEB program representative who nominated Hoagland. “As a resident of Idaho, his energy often is spent on projects with no benefit to himself or his home state,” she added.
Hoagland is deeply connected to the land and its people, Leiendecker said. “Such connections result in his exceptional commitment to the Owyhee Watershed Council,” she added. “He is never too busy to get schools involved in projects or to make contacts with landowners,” she noted.
Over the years, Hoagland has been instrumental in organizing several educational tours regarding noxious weed and juniper expansion problems and stream bank management issues. “His success at seeking and gaining support for watershed restoration efforts in and outside Oregon are inspiring,” Leiendecker said.
OWEB projects support the Oregon Plan for Salmon and Watersheds that emphasizes private, voluntary actions to restore wild salmon populations. OWEB is a state agency led by a policy oversight board. The agency provides grants and services to citizen groups, organizations and agencies working to restore healthy watersheds in Oregon. Funding comes from the Oregon Lottery as a result of a citizen initiative in 1998, sales of salmon license plates, federal salmon funds and other sources.
