Spirit of the Oregon Plan Awards presented Oct. 27 in Seaside
Jason Dedrick, a former Crooked River Watershed Council coordinator who now works as an associate planner for the City of Eugene, was among 11 award recipients from throughout Oregon honored Friday for their work to protect and improve streams, lakes and watersheds at a luncheon in Seaside.
The Oregon Watershed Enhancement Board presented the Spirit of the Oregon Plan Awards during the state agency’s biennial conference. “We are pleased to recognize the exemplary work and leadership of these dedicated people,” said Tom Byler, OWEB executive director.
Dedrick was the only person designated as a winner in the statewide category. All other winners were selected for a specific region of the state.
Dedrick has led both local and statewide efforts to improve Oregon’s watersheds. Under Dedrick’s leadership, nearly two whole sub-watersheds to the Crooked River were restored. The majority of property owners in the Mill Creek and McKay Creek watersheds have participated in stream bank corridor and in-stream restoration projects.
At the statewide level, Dedrick worked for four years to help establish the Network of Oregon Watershed Councils, an organization to coordinate, improve and promote the work of watershed councils. He served as board chair for the past two years. “This work has resulted in the foundation of a support organization that will benefit councils, their partners and the watersheds where they work,” said Rick Craiger, OWEB program representative who nominated Dedrick for the award.
OWEB projects support the Oregon Plan for Salmon and Watersheds that emphasizes private, voluntary actions to restore wild salmon populations. OWEB is a state agency led by a policy oversight board. The agency provides grants and services to citizen groups, organizations and agencies working to restore healthy watersheds in Oregon. Funding comes from the Oregon Lottery as a result of a citizen initiative in 1998, sales of salmon license plates, federal salmon funds and other sources.
