NEW WEBSITE PROTOTYPES STATEWIDE INFORMATION SYSTEM FOR OREGON PLAN FOR SALMON AND WATERSHEDS

North Coast Explorer website: http://northcoastexplorer.info

A wealth of information about Oregon´s North Coast Basin is now available on the web. This new, user-friendly website, called the North Coast Explorer, is available at http://northcoastexplorer.info. It features information ranging from basin stories that highlight local restoration activities and scientific studies of salmon and watersheds, to data and map collections, watershed assessments and other publications, and listings of local experts and resources. The North Coast Explorer was developed as a prototype website that will inform the creation of a statewide natural resource information system to support Oregon Plan for Salmon and Watersheds decision-making, and is a core product of the Oregon Plan for Salmon and Watersheds Information System Strategy. The prototype demonstrates how a website can provide integrated access to natural resources data, tools, and expertise for the North Coast Basin of Oregon. It is designed to serve three user groups: local restoration groups and citizens (e.g., watershed councils and soil and water conservation districts), Oregon Plan partner agencies, and the Oregon Watershed Enhancement Board (OWEB) and program staff.

The website was developed through a partnership among OWEB, the Institute for Natural Resources (INR) at Oregon State University, OSU Libraries, the Infographics Lab at University of Oregon, and the Oregon Department of Administrative Services. To ensure that the prototype website is useful and relevant from the standpoint of users, the development process for the North Coast Explorer involved representatives of the various users to help design, review, and test the site.

The North Coast Explorer prototype will be improved based on user feedback as well as qualitative and quantitative evaluations of the site. The public is invited to explore the site and provide suggestions and comments about its functionality, content, and quality. To submit
